Broken color refers to a technique 'invented' by the Impressionists that is still used today by some artists.  It was first improvised by oil and casein painters, I enjoy applying this technique into pastel works as well.

Painting with the broken color technique, builds the sensation of light.  It can heighten mood and highlight the lights.  This technique incorporated in your work will vary the drama and intensity of each work according to your desires and the message you want your work to emphasize.
